Wheel of life is a coaching tool that helps the client to see how balanced their life is. It is widely used in life coaching, often at the start of a coaching relationship, as the activity is helpful in determining the most useful or impactful areas for goal setting and change.
The wheel of life is easily adapted for any coaching situation, including working with children and teenagers. It works by breaking down the general idea of ‘life’ or ‘work’ into smaller components where it is easier to take action. It helps the client to identify if they are placing too much emphasis on one area of their life and neglecting others.
There are normally 8 areas in the wheel, with labels such as recreation, career, money, health, relationships and so on. The client can choose the labels according to the coaching context. Each area is then given a score out of 10 and these scores provide a quick way of comparing how successfully each area is working. It is then easier to identify one area in which to focus the coaching conversation in order to make changes and set worthwhile goals. The wheel can be revisited to measure progress towards goals and identify new areas for attention.
This tool is widely available for free on the internet (both downloadable templates and interactive exercises) and is included in many coaching books and training courses. It is easily adapted for any context.
