A – Z Coaching and Mentoring – This week’s extract highlights ‘Youth coaching’ and the additional considerations needed when working with young people.

Youth coaching supports and empowers teenagers and young adults to overcome problems and achieve goals.

There may be additional guidance and legislation that needs to be taken into account when working with young people, depending on their age. This includes background criminal record checks for the coach, plus child protection standards and regulations that will affect the limits of confidentiality and how to deal with disclosure.

The ethical boundaries when working with young people, parents and partner organisations such as schools and welfare services will be different and these should be clarified before coaching begins.
